Microsoft es una compañía exitosa.

Ella es una jefa fantástica.

¿Qué tipo de palabras son “successful” (exitosa) y “fantastic” (fantástica)?

“Successful” (exitosa) describe el sustantivo “company” (compañía) y “Fantastic” describe el sustantivo “boss” (jefa).

¿Cómo se llaman las palabras que describen los sustantivos? Muy bien, adjetivos. Ok, vamos a reescribir las dos mismas frases.

Microsoft es una compañía gestionada exitosamente.

Gestiona su equipo estupendamente.

¿Qué tipos de palabras son “successfully” y “fantastically”?

“Successfully” describe como está gestionado Microsoft.

“Fantastically” describe como ella gestiona su equipo.

Successfully describe el verbo manage y fantastically describe el verbo run.

Las palabras que describen verbos se llamen adverbios. Se puede formar muchos de los adverbios, aunque no todos, añadiendo la terminación “ly”.

Successful – successfully

Fantastic – fantastically

Miremos algunas frases:

  • John es un trabajador eficaz (adjetivo)

John trabaja eficazamente (adverbio)

  • Ha escrito el informe brillantemente (advervio)

Era un informe brillante (adjetivo)

Busca una canción de Supertramp, The Logical Song. Contiene muchos adjetivos y adverbios.

Imagina que estas en una entrevista de trabajo y te piden 3 cosas positivas de ti. Dinos 3 características positivas de ti:

Soy eficaz, soy creativo, soy preciso, no cometo errores.

¿Me puedes dar una frase donde cambies todos estos adjetivos por adverbios usando el verbo “work”?

Respuesta: Trabajo eficazmente, creativamente y precisamente.

She is a fantastic boss.

What type of words are successful and fantastic? Successful describes the noun company. Fantastic describes the noun boss.

What do we call words that describe nouns? Adjectives.

Ok, let’s rewrite the same two sentences.

Microsoft is a successfully managed company.

She runs her team fantastically. What type of words are successfully and fantastically? Successfully describes how Microsoft is managed.

Fantastically describes how she runs her team.

Successfully describes the verb manage, fantastically describes the verb run.

Words that describe verbs are called adverbs.

Many, but not all adverbs, are formed by adding “ly” to the adjective. Successful – successfully

Fantastic – fantastically

Ok, PERSON NAME: let’s look at some sentences:

  • John is an efficient worker. (adjective)

John works _________. (adverb)

  • He wrote the report brilliantly (adverb)

It was a _________ report (adjective)

Look for the song by Supertramp, The Logical Song. How many adjectives and adverbs can you hear?

Imagine you are in a job interview and they ask you to describe 3 positive things about yourself. Can you think of 3 ways to describe yourself?

I am efficient, I am creative, I am accurate, I don’t make mistakes.

Can you give me a sentence where you change all those adjectives into adverbs after the verb “work”?

Answer: I work efficiently, creatively and accurately
